CHAINMAIL: 04.28.2023

Including - Refereeing Forgery, Nine Dungeon Design Secrets, and On Writing and Worldbuilding: Volume 1.

Chainmail is a weekly newsletter dedicated to sharing the abundance of excellent content available in the TTRPG space. You'll find YouTube videos, blog posts, quotes from books, and many other forms of media related to improving your skills as game masters and world builders. Enjoy!

Refereeing Forgery - The Dododecahedron

I am a sucker for RPG systems. I love collecting fun system agnostic mechanics that help me provide a mechanical basis for different parts of my game. This a short one but a great one. In the linked article you'll find a d6 system for handling player-made forgeries in your games. I haven't used it yet, but just reading it has gotten me inspired to test it out ASAP.

I love dungeons if that hasn't been made abundantly clear yet. Basically, every other Chainmail includes a resource devoted to improving our ability to run dungeons in our TTRPGs. This one won't be any different. Ben Milton is a big figure in the TTRPG/OSR space, publishing many different RPGs himself as well as running his own newsletter, blog, and youtube channel.

The video I've linked above is more of an overview of what you should be considering when designing your dungeons. It's worth a watch even if you feel like you know what you're doing. I give it a watch ever so often just to get a refresher on these core principles.

On Writing and Worldbuilding: Volume 1

"Religion plays into the things that the ordinary person values, that they are willing to give up, and those things that they would be willing to keep worshipping in order to attain." - Polytheistic Religions

I've written about Polytheistic religion here and I've referenced Timothy Hickson twice, as well. This is different though. This is Timothy Hickson's scripts in book form, and in my opinion, they come across in this format SO WELL. I have highlighted basically every page of this book. It is so full of incites for worldbuilding and DMing. This book includes 17 essays and Tim also published a Volume 2 but I won't talk about that here so that I can use it in a future edition of Chainmail. Just buy the book or put it on your Christmas list or something...

I hope these resources inspire you! See you next week.
